What recovery with physical therapy looks like
Every injury is different, but most patients move through three phases.
| Phase | Typical focus | What you’ll notice |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Calm the pain First 1–2 weeks | Gentle movement, manual therapy, pain relief | Less pain and stiffness, easier sleep |
| 2. Restore movement Weeks 2–6 | Mobility, flexibility, early strengthening | Better range of motion, daily tasks get easier |
| 3. Build strength Week 6 and beyond | Strength, endurance, return to work or sport | Back to normal activity with less risk of re-injury |

Common questions about physical therapy
More questions? See our full FAQ or call (937) 910-0463.
Do I need a referral for physical therapy in Ohio?
Not at our clinic. You can book physical therapy directly with Dayton Pain & Injury. If your insurance plan requires a referral for coverage, our team will help you sort that out.
How long does physical therapy take?
Many patients notice less pain within the first couple of weeks. Rebuilding strength and full movement usually takes several weeks, depending on your injury, consistency and goals. We set a clear timeline after your evaluation.
How often will I go to physical therapy?
Most plans start with two to three visits a week, then taper as you get stronger and more independent with your home exercises.
Does physical therapy hurt?
It shouldn’t be painful. You may feel some muscle effort or mild soreness, like after a workout, but your therapist adjusts every exercise to your comfort level.
What should I wear to physical therapy?
Comfortable clothes you can move in and supportive shoes. Shorts or loose pants help if your knee, hip or leg is being treated.
Is physical therapy covered after a car accident?
In most accident cases, yes. Physical therapy is a standard part of injury recovery, and we bill your auto insurer or attorney directly. Qualifying claims have no out-of-pocket cost.
